If you feel hypnotherapy is not for you, you can enjoy the same benefits of the Solution Focused approach through a counselling-only version known as Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). This can help with a diverse range of challenges including stress, anxiety, relationship problems, and school or work troubles. SFBT is an approach to counselling that is short and effective. Research shows it helps individuals to make a lasting positive change on average in fewer than five sessions and in up to 83% of cases


It works by using the person’s inner resources, with the therapist coaching them to visualise, explore and build solutions. Everyone will have heard the phrase “I felt better just talking to someone”; that’s because expressing thoughts out loud can sometimes crystallise what we’ve always known, or actions we want to take but are afraid to vocalise.


Essentially, SFBT helps you to escape the cycle of difficulty in small steps.

How is SFBT different from other counselling methods?
Sometimes we spend too much time focusing on negative issues from our past and wishing ‘if only’. When we are stuck in a loop, we feel isolated, and talking about it makes us feel someone understands and we are less alone. However, that’s only part of the story. The other part is how do we change?
Early counselling techniques focused on the idea that if we knew ‘why’ our emotions are as they are, we would understand how to ‘fix’ the problem. We now know that it is our thoughts about events, rather than the events themselves, that dictate our emotions. Knowing this means that if we change the way we think, we can change the way we feel. The SFBT philosophy is that everyone has inside them all the resources they need to make the change; they just need to be guided in how to activate them. It’s a bit like knowing your destination but needing a map to reach to it.
SFBT helps us imagine a different future, a future where we have achieved that change, and provides ways to work towards it.
