Sometimes we spend too much time focusing on negative issues from our past and wishing ‘if only’. When we are stuck in a loop, we feel isolated, and talking about it makes us feel someone understands and we are less alone. However, that’s only part of the story. The other part is how do we change?
Early counselling techniques focused on the idea that if we knew ‘why’ our emotions are as they are, we would understand how to ‘fix’ the problem. We now know that it is our thoughts about events, rather than the events themselves, that dictate our emotions. Knowing this means that if we change the way we think, we can change the way we feel. The SFBT philosophy is that everyone has inside them all the resources they need to make the change; they just need to be guided in how to activate them.
